CGP-53153 is a steroidal inhibitor of 5 alpha reductase is a steroidal which effects the conversion of testosterone (T) to 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In vitro, CGP 53153 competitively inhibited rat microsomal 5α-reductase from prostate by 50% (ICs0) at a concentration of 36 nM compared to the reference compound finasteride which inhibited 5α-reductase with an ICs0 of 11 nM in the same system. In vivo, inhibition of 5α-reductase activity was characterized in three different test systems.
