Safety Sorbitan ester is widely used in cosmetics, food, oral and topical pharmaceutical preparations, and is generally considered non-toxic and non-irritating. However, there have been occasional reports of allergic reactions to topical agents containing sorbitan cilexetil. Sorbitan ester emits irritating fumes when heated to decomposition temperature.

Source and Preparation This product is a mixture of sorbitol mono-dehydrate, di-dehydrate and three molecules of oleic acid. Its production method is to firstly dehydrate sorbitol at 150-152°C, and esterify it with three molecules of oleic acid under the catalysis of sodium bicarbonate. Or it can be prepared by direct esterification of α-sorbitol and three molecules of oleic acid at 180-280°C.
