Apelin-13

Apelin-13, an endogenous neuropeptide, is the ligand for the G-protein-coupled receptor APJ, an alternative coreceptor with CD4 for HIV-1 infection. Apelin-13 is generated from apelin-36, which is a putative receptor protein related to the angiotensin receptor (AT1). Apelin-13 exerted an acidification-rate-promoting activity in the CHO cells expressing the APJ receptor with EC50 value of 0.37 nM. Apelin-13 is a 13 amino acid polypeptide encoded by the apelin gene which yields a pre-proprotein that is processed to generate bioactive peptides. Apelin-13 is also involved in the learning and memory process.
