Ammonium chloride is used as an acidifier in oral preparations. It is also used as a food additive and preservative, and as an expectorant in cough medicines. It can cause intracellular alkalization and metabolic acidosis thus effecting enzymatic activity and influencing the process of biological system. Ammonium chloride is an autophagy inhibitor.
