Safety | Powdered cellulose is widely used in oral pharmaceutical preparations and food, and is a non-toxic and non-irritating substance. However, allergic reactions may occur when inhaled, ingested, or in contact with the skin. Powdered cellulose is not absorbed after oral administration and therefore has little toxicity. Cellulose used as a formulation excipient does not cause diarrhea, however, consumption of large amounts of cellulose may act as a laxative. Abuse of preparations containing cellulose by inhalation or injection can lead to the formation of fibrous granulomas. LD50 (rat, oral): >5 g/kg; LD50 (rat, inhalation): 5.8 g/m³/4 h; LD50 (rabbit, dermal): >2 g/kg |
Incompatibilities | Incompatibility with strong oxidizing agents. |
