Lipid droplets (LDs) are unusual organelles that store lipids as reservoirs of metabolic energy and membrane lipid precursors, and have been identified in the nucleus of some cells. They are made by binding monolayer of surface phospholipids, which are embedded with specific proteins, such as perilipins and metabolic enzymes.
