Application A labeled hormone in humans that anticipates the daily onset of darkness. Involved in the synchronization of circadian rhythms of physiological functions. May be used as a sleep aid and to treat some sleep disorders. Also the compound is a free-radical scavenger and wide-spectrum antioxidant. In vitro melatonin forms complexes with cadmium and other metals.
