The enzyme is involved in the mevalonate pathway in Archaea. The activity has also been identified in the plant Mentha piperita (peppermint). It is strictly specific for ATP but can use other phosphate acceptors such as dimethylallyl phosphate, geranyl phosphate, or fosfomycin.
