Leuprolide Acetate

Lupron acetate is the acetate salt of a synthetic nonapeptide analog of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Lupron binds to and activates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors. Continuous, prolonged use of leuprolide in men causes desensitization of pituitary GnRH receptors and inhibition of pituitary secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), resulting in a significant decrease in testosterone production. In women, long-term use can lead to decreased estradiol production.
