Sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate is widely used in a variety of pharmaceutical formulations as a buffering agent and sequestering agent. Therapeutically, it is used as a mild laxative and to treat hypophosphatemia. It is also used in food, for example, as an emulsifier in processed cheese.
