Nelfinavir, also known as AG1343, is a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 protease inhibitor (Ki = 2 nM). It had anti-HIV activities in vitro with EC50 values of 30-60 nM. Nelfinavir has been widely used with other anti-HIV drugs for the treatment of HIV infection. It has shown prolonged viral suppression, good tolerability and a unique resistance profile. Nelfinavir also has efficacy against cancer, malaria, tuberculosis, and SARS. Nelfinavir has direct antitumor effects. It reduces angiogenesis and cell invasion, inhibits the Akt pathway, induces autophagy, and promotes apoptosis of cancer cells. Nelfinavir is the active ingredient in the drug product sold under the trade name Viracept®.
