Applications |
Benzoxonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound used as an antimicrobial agent in pharmaceutical preparations. In general, solutions with concentrations of 0.01.to 0.02% w/v can be used as antimicrobials for injection, eye preparations and ear preparations. Benzoxonium chloride can also be used as a wetting agent, solvent enhancer and topical disinfectant. In cosmetics such as deodorants, benzoxalammonium chloride at concentrations greater than 0.5% w/v can also be used as antibacterial agents. The physical properties and applications of benzoxonium chloride are similar to those of other cationic surfactants such as cetroxonium bromide.
|
Incompatibilities |
Benzoxonium chloride should not be compatible with soap and other anionic surfactants. When inorganic acids and some salt solutions are added, the solution with a concentration higher than 2% w/v will precipitate.

|
Source and Preparation |
2-[2-[4-(1, 1, 3, 3-tetramethylbutyl) phenoxyl] ethoxy] ethyl chloride was synthesized by condensation of P-diisobutylphenol with β, β '-dichlorodiethyl ether under alkaline catalysis. The product is then converted into the corresponding tertiary amine by alkaline dimethylamine. After distillation and purification, it is dissolved in an appropriate amount of organic solvent and treated with benzyl chloride. The product is precipitated.
